NPC President Canet delivers promise to serve you well

Negros Press Club President Carla N. Canet has indeed delivered her promise to serve best her fellow members of the club who gave them their trust and mandate for her to lead the club for a year.

One year is already enough for me and my fellow officers to prove that we have never failed you in electing us as your leaders.

From the time you put your trust on us, I made sure that I will serve you with all of my heart.

The NPC Presidency is no joke. This is indeed a tough job. Everyone is observing and watching you on how you perform your tasks starting on how courteous you are, how you deal with people and community and the decisions you take. The pressures are all over especially that we are all practitioners.

But I took the great challenge, absorbed all the pressures and stresses and lead the club sincerely.

Just for the record, I am the President, as far as I know, who made sure that we the NPC officers for 2014 could take our oath of office right on March 1, 2014, which is the first day of our office.

It was a grand celebration held at the Social Hall of the Provincial Capitol Building. May I say thank you to the honorable Governor Alfredo G. Maranon, Jr. for allowing us to use the Social Hall, a place which is rich in history.

After our inauguration, we all buckled down to work.

The first work done was to enter a contract with Nice Billboard Solutions, Inc. for the rental of the upper portion of the NPC building for the purpose of maintaining advertising signs in a form of billboard or LED screen. The contract took effect last December 31, 2013 and the rental cost is P10,000 every month with an increase of 5 percent every year for five years.

As part of this agreement, the new lessee Nice Billboard Solutions also provided our club with a brand new computer set with a muli-functional printer which could be used as a scanner and copier at the same time. The said lessee also provided the club with an eight series four infrared Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) infrared cameras which can record scenes even on the darkest night.

This agreement was covered by NPC Board Resolution No. 14-08, series of 2014.

Barely 13 days of our assumption of office, we are able to get computer donations from the Office of Governor Maranon. The good governor generously provided us with two sets of top of the line computer units with multi-functional printer.

You can now see and more NPC working journalists and broadcasters are able to enjoy these facilities every day with internet connections.

With this project, the NPC is now high tech and automated. We now transmit and receive our communications via electronic mails.

“We have documents that are sent manually. But most of our communications are now sent electronically.”

We also have our new 42-inch LED television, a WOW videoke and a brand new 1.5 horse power air-condition unit where we purchased it with the use of our little resources.
These are little things that we did that mean a lot to us and hopefully also to our fellow members.

We held bowling tournaments twice - one is the PAGCOR sponsored bowling tournament held on May 17, 2014 where the Visayan Daily star was named Champion.

The other one was the Energy Development Corporation sponsored Bowling tournament held last December 14, 2015 where again the Visayan Daily Star won as champion.

We held our regular media night during the Pana-ad festival on April 18, 2014.

We held forums and seminars where the major ones were with the presence of National Scientist Dr. Raul Fabella in relation to the the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program. That was made possible with the help of past President Modesto Sa-onoy.

The other seminar was with the help of the Philippine Press Institute and Coca Cola FEMSA on Health and Wellness and also the creation of the Press Council in Negros Occidental on August 29, 2014.

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines also sponsored the seminar dubbed as Power 101 held at Planta hotel.

I was luckily invited as President of the Negros Press Club to attend and do a news coverage of the staging of the 3rd Philippine Festival at Ueno park in Tokyo, Japan last August 29, to September 2, 2014 where the MassKara streetdance champion for 2013 performed there.

The MassKara Media night was also successfully held at GT hotel on October 18, 2014. Members of the club enjoyed the eat all you can buffet and other games made possible with the help and generosity of our friends and supporters.

November 15, the NPC in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bacolod East headed by its President Councilor Sonya Verdeflor successfully conducted the 1st Media awards night such as the NPC Media Excellence Award and the Rotary Club of Bacolod East Media Lifetime Achievement Award with the bright idea of NPC Past President Elsie Jolingan.

It was a night to remember for us officers and also the awardees where it was the first time that through the efforts of the NPC, our deserving media practitioners were duly recognized of their great contribution to media practice through the years.
With the success of this event, the NPC and RCBE signed a memorandum of agreement to make the media awards a joint endeavor of both organizations.

We also held a tree planting activity along with our long time partner Smart Communications, Inc. at the Negros First Ranch at Barangay Sta. Rosa, Murcia on Nov. 22, 2014.

The following day, November 23, the NPC officers and members with the participation of the Mass Communication students of the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos and University of St. La Salle, Bacolod and their school publication editorial staff.

On December 14, we held another bowling tournament and fellowship night sponsored by the Energy Development Corporation. In that sports event, still the Visayan Daily Star emerged as the champion.
